On Sunday 29th June starting 6pm at St Andrew's Centre, the churches of Waiuku will have a combined service to celebrate and affirm Christian unity. All are welcome to attend. The service will be followed by a shared supper.
This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the first ecumenical Christian council, a significant event in church history. The Council of Nicaea was called by Emperor Constantine, and was attended by 318 people, mainly from the East. The Church, having just emerged from hiding and persecution, was beginning to experience the difficulties of sharing the same faith in a variety of different cultural and political contexts of that time. Agreement on the text of a creed was a matter of defining the essential common foundations on which to build local communities that recognised each other as sister churches, each respecting the diversity of the other.
